Elvis recorded this Dennis Linde composition on March 28, 1972 at RCA Studios in Hollywood. Musicians on the session were: James Burton (lead guitar), John Wilkinson (rhythm guitar), Charlie Hodge (guitar), Emory Gordy (bass), Ronnie Tutt (drums) and Glen D. Hardin (piano). J.D. Sumner and the Stamps provided the vocal accompaniment. Horns and strings were added later along with additional percussion by Jerry Carrigan and additional guitar work by Dennis Linde.

Take number 6 was shipped out as the single on August 1, 1972 with "It's A Matter of Time" as the B-side. In the USA "Burning Love" peaked at #2 in its 15 week-run on the Billboard Magazine's pop singles chart and hit #1 on Cashbox magazine's pop singles chart. In its 9-week run on the British pop singles chart it peaked at #7.
