process: When released on FTD's "Nevada Nights" back in 2008, the August 21,1974 MS got a bit neglected when playing second fiddle to the now famed opening night performance from two clays earlier. Audiowise, it's pretty indicative of all the soundboards [all apparently sourced from cassette copies] from that Vegas engagement, viz, quite well balanced but exhibiting a flat, brittle and hollow sound, locking in strong transients and devoid of any real musical dynamics. And here, even before attempting to sync the comically high-pitched/fast-running audience recording along with the dragging soundboard [not a task to take on lightly], it was essential to try and forge the correct verb, delay and EQ combinations in order to readdress at least some of those sonic issues. Though somewhat wanting in audience response and atmosphere (I rode the faders a little in-between tracks to compensate), the slightly incomplete audience track [only one channel was useable] had quite nice acoustic ambience that helped to prop up and expand the mono soundboard in a unified and more realistic sound not too dissimilar to the high-quality reel-to-reel recordings of February 1973. The uptick in audio tends to shine an the more contemporary sounding material and in particular those tracks we do not have any known multi-tracks of ["It's Midnight", "I'm Leavin'", "If You Talk In Your Sleep" etc.], though, the performance as an entity [embodying a varied and most satisfying setlist] is a more than worthy - perhaps even revelatory - listen in this newly polished upgraded format. Two repair patches were necessary to restore the show to a more complete form: The opening '2001: A Space Odyssey' intro was grabbed from the chief January '74 show featured on FTD's I Found My Thrill [the sole 1974 showroom desk recording available with the opening theme intact], together with a short insert of the missing section [the original August '74 audience track still runs underneath the new fix] of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" - acquired from the same Jan/Feb Vegas stint a few days later into the engagement. | |||||||||||||||
